Costs & advice
Dental treatment abroad
Careful preparation helps you assess treatment quality, total costs, aftercare and possible risks before making a decision. This guide shows which questions you should clarify in advance.
A low unit price abroad says little about the total cost: flights, hotels and possible trips for corrections add up – and who provides aftercare if something feels wrong?
Request a complete written treatment plan, information about the materials used, clear warranty terms and a binding plan for follow-up care before booking.
| Topic | What you should clarify |
|---|---|
| Treatment scope & total price | Ask for written confirmation of which services, materials, temporary restorations, medication and check-ups are included. A low initial price does not always reflect the total cost. |
| Travel & accommodation | Include flights or other transport, hotels, transfers, meals and possible travel companions in your calculation. Additional nights due to delayed healing or schedule changes can also create extra costs. |
| Materials & documentation | Ask for an implant passport, exact material details, batch numbers and complete treatment records. This information is important if another practice later provides follow-up care. |
| Qualifications & treatment plan | Check the qualifications of the clinicians and request a clear written plan covering the diagnosis, alternatives, risks, timeline and planned treatment steps. |
| Aftercare & corrections | Clarify when check-ups take place, who provides aftercare in your home country and who pays for it. Also ask whether corrections require another trip. |
| Complications & emergencies | Ask who you can contact after returning home if you experience pain, inflammation or problems with the restoration, and how urgent assistance will be arranged. |
| Language & informed consent | The diagnosis, risks, consent documents, warranty terms and care instructions should be available in a language you fully understand. Do not rely only on verbal translation for medical details. |
| Warranty & legal framework | Read the warranty terms carefully, including scope, duration, exclusions, responsible provider and jurisdiction. Check whether travel and treatment costs are covered if corrective work is needed. |
| Insurance & reimbursement | Before treatment, ask your insurer which documents and approvals are required and whether invoices and treatment plans from the destination country will be accepted. |
This checklist provides general guidance and does not replace individual dental, legal or insurance advice.
Clarify everything in writing before booking.
Take enough time for your decision. Do not book travel until the diagnosis, treatment scope, total costs, schedule, aftercare, warranty and procedure in case of complications have been clearly documented.
